Light to Night 2024, organized by the National Gallery Singapore, is set to captivate audiences for three weeks from Jan 19 to Feb 8 at the Civic District. This year’s theme, “Reimagine,” promises an immersive experience with over 60 artworks and programs.

From captivating installations to engaging light projections, the festival invites the audience to explore innovative ways of interacting with art and play. A highlight of this year’s event is the placement of light projectors across various areas within the Civic District, including National Gallery Singapore, The Art House, Victoria Concert Hall, and Asian Civilisations Museums.

Under the theme of “Reimagine,” the festival seeks to foster a renewed appreciation for the visual arts, offering attendees a chance for rediscovery and imagination.

Seventeen-year-old Chay Li Teng Marianne shares her experience of the festival, noting the impact of the light shows on her perception of the Singaporean art scene.

“I’m into art, and I do like to go to museums. But my understanding of art in Singapore is largely traditional art, so being able to see different forms of artistic expression in different forms of art, like through light shows which is the main medium here, is very interesting. It’s something that I’ve never seen before, so I think it opened my eyes,” said Li Teng.

“I would recommend this festival to my friends because it allows them to gain new perceptions of the art because it's actually quite vibrant. It's not as deep as a lot of people think it is,” she added.

In addition to the captivating artworks, attendees also find themselves immersed in a vibrant atmosphere filled with music and laughter.

Seventeen-year-old Lyn Pei Miaozhuanh says: “Attending this event with my close friend has been quite meaningful. It’s a relaxed environment where everyone can come and chill. Supporting the art scene here is quite casual. It’s a casual invitation for Singaporeans to slow down and appreciate the artwork.”

The festival’s inclusivity is highlighted by twenty-year-old interior design student Liew Kah Yan who praises the mesmerizing quality of the light

projections.

“I think that even if you're not an artistic person, it doesn’t matter, you just come to take a look and expand your horizons. It’s a chance to step out of your comfort zone, explore the world of art, experience something different, and maybe even discover something new,” said Kah Yan.

Light to Night 2024 : Where Art Meets Love

In a dazzling celebration of creativity and connection, Light to Night festival 2024 has returned with a mesmerizing theme: ‘Reimagine’. This year’s celebration transcends mere visual aesthetics; it delves into the transformative power of art, weaving the colors of love into the lives of many.

“I define art by the shade of the color. To me, art resonates with me because I see it as hope…because for me, when there is no hope, all I see is black and white. Just being here makes me feel hopeful because when there is hope, I finally get to see colors,” shares Muhammad Haiziq Bin Abdul Murad, a 17-year-old art enthusiast, encapsulating the spirit of Light to Night 2024.

One of the focal points of this year’s festivities is the light projection titled ‘Temple of Love’ by Arahmaini. This moving artwork tells the story of a monstrous force that descends upon the world, leaving destruction in its wake. Yet, hope emerges as Mother Earth intervenes, using her powerful hands, boundless love, and nurturing energy to heal the earth. The world, once healed, is reborn and pulsated with renewed love.

This projection beautifully mirrors the theme of Light to Night 2024, showcasing how art, even in its most dramatic forms, can instill love and hope in the hearts of families and loved ones. The ‘Temple of Love’ becomes a metaphor for the challenges faced in relationships, with the healing power of love ultimately prevailing.

The celebration extends to another captivating art projection, ‘Living the Life’ by Teo Eng Seng. This piece invites viewers to embrace the imperfections of life through riotous compositions and vibrant colors. Teo’s work becomes a celebration of the openness and curiosity that defines an artist’s life, offering a unique perspective that resonates with the diverse experience of families and loved ones.

What makes Light to Night truly unique is its ability to not only showcase man-made art installations but also highlights the artistry of nature. The sunset transitioning to the night sky contribute to the artistic dimension of the festival, creating a harmonious blend of human and natural artistry. This seamless integration is exemplified in the ‘Temple of Love’ where Mother Nature’s intervention mirrors the beauty of the world around us

In the embrace of ‘Reimagine’, Light To Night whispers to us that art isn’t just about what we see; it’s about what we feel. As families stroll hand in hand and couples share quiet moments amidst the radiant displays, Light to Night becomes a celebration of the versatility of art in painting the colours of love. Through the heartfelt narratives of ‘Temple of Love’ and the vibrant celebration of life in ‘Living the Life’, the festival showcases how art, in all its forms, has the power to color our lives with the hues of love, forging connections that goes beyond the confines of canvas and frame.
